Self help tactics come in a myriad of forms. Sometimes they require tremendous effort and energy just to stay focused. Sometimes, however, all we need to do is implement small puck daddy action and more gradual changes, changes that require much less energy but that in the long run accomplish the same purpose.
Get to know yourself. This is not about taking personality quizzes in popular magazines: this is about finding out what makes you happy and what you live for. For example, do not resent your spouse because he or she does not clean toilets to your exacting standards. Instead, focus on how well he keeps the lawn looking nice, or how thankful you are that he even pitches in at all!
Make small gradual changes in your behavior. Quitting bad habits cold turkey works in some instances but in other situations smaller and more gradual changes more effectively achieve long-lasting change. Walking one block every day is better than running a half mile one time and giving up because it is too hard.
Part of any successful personal development program is finding your passion. Your goals in both the short- and long-term should be selected with this in mind. The personal satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from doing work you love should be a goal in and of itself. A goal that calls for work you hate, though, may be too hard to achieve.
Do not avoid starting a project because you feel you do not have the energy to finish. This is an insidious form of procrastination that can push your personal development goals right off the end of your schedule. Make a start on your project and tell yourself you can break off when you get too tired.
Praise and compliments only amount to so much when the flowery words are removed; take the time to filter and process. Listen closely and get to the meat of the feedback so you can build upon the positives without losing yourself in the glory.
Make sure you get enough sleep at night. The average adult usually needs at least eight hours of sleep. If you have a hard time falling and staying asleep try activities that will tire you like exercising. By changing your routine you can develop better sleeping habits.
In order to improve your personal development performance, look for goals you have been putting off and get to work on them. Ambitious goals and multiple goals are good things – unless you tend to leave some of them unattended. Make a plan that moves you towards your problem goals, at least a little bit every day.
To help you improve yourself personally, exercising everyday is essential. Exercise can help you improve your focus, enhance your ability in a variety of sports and generally improve your health and well being. Exercise is also key to personal development since exercise releases endorphins, which are a mood enhancer and promote a more positive outlook on life.
Sports are a great way to develop yourself, mentally, as well as, physically. We learn rules, camaraderie, self-discipline and sharing. Knowing how to win is a good thing. Working as a team, in order to win, can be even more satisfying.
If we truly desire to change, we must depend on ourselves to effect that change. Indeed, we have to make deliberate and calculated efforts to insure it. Anything less only assures our failure. The steps delineated above pave the way towards change. It is up to us to follow that pavement.
